GhostBed Mattress Review 2022 – Should You Buy It?

With four mattress options, GhostBed is among the best mattress companies to bring forth cooling technology and pressure support.

Think about the last time you were afraid to go to sleep because you were worried there was a ghost living under your bed. If you have this childhood memory, then you’ll be able to relate to GhostBed’s CEO, Marc Werner, who coined the company’s name after his recurring fear that a ghost lived in his room.

GhostBed originated from Werner’s struggle to find a comfortable sleeping situation after undergoing three different neck surgeries. Werner eventually committed to creating his very own mattresses and pillows to finally sleep better, and he founded Nature’s Sleep, which now makes all of GhostBed’s products in the United States.

In 2015, GhostBed launched their first mattress in a box, and from there, the company has created three other mattresses, two of which are hybrid, and all of which provide a comfortable cooling effect to their owners.

GhostBed

An all-foam mattress with a black and white cover and white and blue foam.

At only 11 inches high, this four-layer mattress combines latex and gel memory foam to create a mattress that proves soft and cool. It’s ideal for all sleeping positions and works especially well for sleepers who are looking for a mattress that will relieve pain throughout their body.

Underneath the cover, made with viscose and polyester, comes 1.5 inches of latex foam. This layer has tiny holes throughout its surface area to create an initial layer of air flow while maintaining a malleable feel.

Following the latex layer is two inches of gel memory foam. This is the layer that handles most of the temperature regulation throughout the mattress. Instead of heat building up around your body, you’ll feel the gel foam pulling it away from you.

A final 7.5 inches of high-density foam complete the GhostBed. Even without the help from springs, this layer is able to support your spine just fine. The best part? It works to prevent back pain, so you can wake up the next morning with ease.

We found the GhostBed to be the best firm mattress in this price range.

GhostBed Luxe

Blue, pink and white mattress foam.

If temperature regulation is a top priority when it comes to a mattress, the GhostBed Luxe is a great place to start. It’s the model with enough cooling properties to keep you from waking up in a hot sweat.

Starting with a cover made with “Ghost Ice” fabric, you’ll instantly feel a cool rush upon touching this mattress. The outer, quilted fabric includes a half inch of cooling fiber, which automatically works to prevent you from sweating in your sleep. Also included in the outer cover is an inch of gel memory foam, yet another aspect of the GhostBed Luxe that adds to its large cooling capacity.

Following the three-part outer cover comes the Ghost Ice layer, which only increases the amount of coolness you’ll feel with this mattress. Even after hours of rest, you’ll still feel cool temperature regulation with this layer’s patent-pending Phase Change Technology.

Next comes two inches of gel-infused memory foam, where pressure relief steps in, followed by the Ghost Bounce foam layer, which is comparable to the contouring and bouncy properties of memory foam and latex, respectively. The Ghost Bounce foam later not only provides a touch of softness, but also an aspect of bouncy support.

The final layer in the GhostBed Luxe is 7.5 inches of high-density base foam. The base foam layer is a critical layer in foam mattresses because it creates a firm sleeping foundation. This layer is where you’ll find long-term durability and yet another firm foundation to rely on for pain relief during sleep.

As a multi-foam-layer mattress with more than just a couple layers dedicated to cooling your bed, the GhostBed Luxe is a perfect fit for sleepers who struggle with sleep due to hot temperatures. Just like the other GhostBed models, this mattress fits all sleeping positions, but we recommend it for back or stomach sleepers. In fact, this model is one of our favorite mattresses for back sleepers in 2021!

GhostBed Flex

A hybrid mattress with layers of white, blue and pink mattress foam with a layer of individually wrapped coil springs.

Do you prefer the feeling an innerspring mattress provides? If so, the GhostBed Flex may be the best mattress to choose. Starting with an outermost cooling cover, you’ll find this hybrid mattress to be great with temperature regulation.

The first three layers are fully dedicated to providing a cooling component to your sleep, while also creating a soft, yet supportive surface to rest on. The first foam layer is made with one inch of cooling fiber and is woven into the top cover.

Next, comes one inch of gel memory foam that’s also intertwined into the cover, and another inch of gel memory foam that begins the process of airflow.

After the initial layers of cooling memory foam comes one inch of transition foam that targets pressure points throughout your body.

Even if you move around a lot throughout the night, you’ll find this layer to be helpful in minimizing your motion transfer, which is great if you share a bed with a partner.

Finally, we reach 8.5 inches of coils, each individually wrapped to again reduce motion transfer. To give extra edge support, GhostBed created the Spirited Edge™ support system, which includes two rows of reinforced coils on the outermost circumference of your mattress. For one last layer, this mattress includes one inch of support foam at the very bottom.

GhostBed 3D Matrix

A hybrid mattress with layers of white, blue and pink foam and green gel and a layer of individually wrapped coil springs.

The newest GhostBed model, the GhostBed 3D Matrix, is a highly innovative hybrid option from the company that is particularly ideal for people who share their bed. While still prioritizing cooling properties, the GhostBed 3D Matrix comes with an all-new 3D Matrix polymer layer that directly absorbs body heat.

The green and white gel formula also brings forth a unique layer of comfort that moves with your body without letting it sink too deep into lower layers. You’ll find it at the top of your mattress, right underneath the cooling mattress cover.

After the polymer layer, comes two inches of gel memory foam followed by a Ghost Bounce layer, which promotes motion transfer at a comfortable level. Again, if you share your bed, you’ll need a layer like this so that you aren’t waking up from your partner’s restless sleep patterns.

Next comes one inch of soft transition foam, which promotes pressure relief to all of the pain points in your body. This layer is crucial if you share a bed, as it also encourages less tossing and turning.

Just like the GhostBed Flex, the GhostBed 3D Matrix also includes 8.5 inches of individually wrapped support coils with two outer rows of Spirited Edge™ support and a final, one-inch layer of high-density support foam.

Ghostbed 3D Matrix Review - Gel Polymer

Material

Is there a type of material GhostBed doesn’t use? Hardly so. Throughout the four different mattresses, you will run across all different kinds of foam, including gel, latex, and memory.

Plus, GhostBed offers two hybrid models, which use coil springs for ultra-flexible support. And, with GhostBed’s newest model, the GhostBed 3D Matrix, you’ll find a different kind of cooling material: a layer of gel polymer built to gather your body’s heat, right at the mattress’s surface. Ghostbed is one of the more innovative manufacturers of all the mattresses we reviewed.

GhostBed foams are also CertiPUR-US certified, so you’ll know your mattress comes without ozone depleters, harmful flame retardants or various heavy metals.

Best Sleeping Positions

GhostBed mattresses work for all sleeping positions and is particularly beneficial to side sleepers who appreciate a certain level of softness at the top layers. Plus, GhostBed offers two hybrid options, perfect for anyone sharing a bed with a partner who moves around during sleep.

GhostBed has determined an average firmness rating for their mattresses to be 6.5, which they believe is the perfect level of firmness for a balanced support, no matter what position you sleep in.

Temperature Regulation

GhostBed takes an A+ when it comes to temperature regulation. Just look at each of the four mattresses, and you’ll notice that temperature regulation is a critical priority, even at the foremost layer: the outer cover.

Not to mention, GhostBed mattresses each have their own way of regulating temperature in the innermost layers. Whether it be by including a layer of gel foam, latex or an innovative polymer layer (think GhostBed 3D Matrix), you know you will always be sleeping on layer after layer of plush and cool material with a GhostBed mattress.

Take note that of the four models, the GhostBed Luxe is traditionally known for its cooling properties. It’s recommended for sleepers who need to sleep on an extremely cool bed in order to comfortably get the sleep they need.

Motion Transfer

GhostBed works hard to reduce the amount of motion transfer on each of their mattress models. Even from the most basic of the models, the original GhostBed, you’ll find a springy foam mattress that will only create a small amount of motion transfer.

Both hybrid mattresses, the GhostBed Flex and the GhostBed 3D Matrix have low motion transfer as well, due to their layers of coil springs, which succinctly follow your body’s movement.

Sinkage

Within each GhostBed mattress you will find a high-density foam core that reduces sinkage rates to a comfortable level. The GhostBed Flex, for example, follows you as you move around and works to sink your body only as much as necessary.

For more sagging prevention, each mattress comes with a solid lower layer of base foam that creates a firm foundation that will prevent too much sinking from occurring. You’ll find softness on the top, yet a firm bottom layer with a purpose to lessen sinkage.

Edge Support

If you share a bed with a partner, then you’re well aware of how important a mattress’s edge support is. GhostBed has created its very own edge support technology known as the Spirited Edge™ Support design.

You’ll find this technology in the GhostBed Flex and the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattresses, where the second-to-last layer comes with 8.5 inches of coil support, including two circumferential rows of individually wrapped coils that ultimately reduce the likelihood you’d slip off the edge of the bed.

Warranty, Trial Length & Return Process

Warranties will differ among the various mattress models. Here’s a breakdown:

  • GhostBed: 20 years
  • GhostBed Luxe: 25 years
  • GhostBed Flex: 25 years
  • GhostBed 3D Matrix: 25 years

GhosteBed mattress warranties will cover body indentations that exceed one inch and are not related to a sag in the foundation of your bed. Warranties will also cover any manufacturer errors in your mattress’s structure. This does not apply to personal damages that you create. If you need warranty coverage, make sure you provide proof of purchase.

GhostBed offers a 101-night sleep trial. After 30 days, you are eligible to return your GhostBed mattress if you are not satisfied. This is an adequate amount of time but not the longest mattress free trial period.

These services only apply to mattresses directly ordered from GhostBed’s website.

If you’d prefer not to pay the total cost upfront, you can finance through Affirm and pay over a 6- or 12-month period.

Shipping & Set-Up Process

GhostBed only ships through FedEx to locations within the United States and covers the shipping costs for your mattress, with the exception of deliveries to Alaska and Hawaii, where there is a $600 freight charge.

By the time you’ve received your new mattress, you’ll want to set it up as soon as possible. Like with other mattresses in a box, you will need to open your new GhostBed mattress in the room you plan to use it. First, remove the rolled mattress from its shipment box and lay it out on your bed’s frame. Next, remove outer wrapping and roll your mattress out evenly. You will notice it will start to fill your bed’s frame, but it may take a day or two to fully expand. GhostBed’s website also notes that if you order your new mattress during the colder months, it may take up to five days for it to fully decompress.

For customers who would prefer someone else to set up their mattress, GhostBed offers a White Glove Delivery service for $199 for one to two items and $299 for three or more items. This service includes delivery, mattress setup and removal of your old mattress and any packaging materials.

FAQ

Most frequent brand questions

What is a GhostBed mattress?

GhostBed has four different kinds of mattresses, including one hybrid. GhostBed mattresses are best known for their medium-firm support and their cooling abilities, especially at the surface level.

What’s behind the name? According to GhostBed’s website, Marc Werner, CEO of GhostBed, feared that ghosts lived under his bed, so he included it in the company’s name.

How thick is a GhostBed?

GhostBed mattresses range from 11-13 inches, depending on the model:

– GhostBed: 11”
– GhostBed Luxe: 13”
– GhostBed Flex: 13”
– GhostBed 3D Matrix: 13”

Does GhostBed need a box spring?

No, GhostBed mattresses do not necessarily need a box spring, mainly because their foam components would not bide well with a box spring support system. Additionally, GhostBed offers two hybrid options, which do not require additional spring support.

GhostBed does offer box springs for purchase, so it is up to you if you’d like your bed frame to be a traditional box spring.

How long do GhostBed mattresses last?

GhostBed mattress warranties range from 20-25 years, meaning these mattresses are built for the long haul.

It’s hard to determine exactly how long your GhostBed mattress will last, but you can expect its lifespan to increase the more you take care of it. Some tips to take good care of your GhostBed mattress include:

– Spot clean the outer cover of your mattress with warm water and gentle detergent, as needed.
– Never flip your GhostBed mattress, but rather, rotate it every few months to evenly disperse your body’s weight on the surface area.
– Vacuum your mattress with a handheld vacuum.
– Dry any spills by placing your mattress out in the sun or blow drying it immediately.
– Applying baking soda is another easy way to absorb any spilled liquid.
